Happy four years to my little blog! Since starting my blog four years ago today I have learnt a lot about what works and what doesn't. I wanted to give anyone who wants to start a blog or already has a blog a few tips about what to do and what not to do. I may not be an established blogger but I feel like I do have some experience that I can share.
Tip 1
If you're creating a blog you need to work out why you're making one e.g. What will you write about? Why are you making this blog? One thing that I've noticed over the past four years is that the blogging world has become extremely saturated, which inevitably means people will be posting the same content. What I've learnt is that you need to be true to yourself and work out what makes you stand out. Ask yourself if what you're writing about is relevant and something you're interested in, you also need to make sure it fits in with your style.
Tip 2
For some people having a massive following is really important, personally I don't think you should be too worried about who's following you. Most people forget that the majority of established bloggers that we see today started blogging as a hobby and it turned into a career. Another thing people also fail to understand is that followers aren't gained overnight, although is does happen for some it's quite unlikely. To maintain a decent following, you need to be posting consistently and write about things that are true to you otherwise it isn't genuine. One thing to remember is followers will come naturally and you'll have people eager to read your content every week by doing small things as posting consistently.
Tip 3
Social media has changed the way many businesses advertise and I guess it's the same with blogging. If you want to help boost your following then use Instagram, Twitter, Bloglovin and other social media platforms. I think Instagram is peopbaly the easiest to use, as you can hashtag things that will attract the right followers. It may be a useful tool but again you must post consistently because people will get bored and will unfollow you. If you use social media in the right way then it can help you increase your following.
Tip 4
Connect with others! Connecting with other people can mean different things, it's important to connect with the audience that are following you for instance if someone where to comment something nice, comment back or like the comment, but show your audience you appreciate that they're reading your content. Networking is also a greet way to form relationships, whether you're connecting with other creatives or brands it will help you move in the direction you want.
Tip 5
Your image is also important but you don't need to spend vast amounts of money for your blog because you could have an aesthetically pleasing looking blog but have poor content, so a balance of the two is what you should aim for. For the first three years of having my blog I just used a blogspot template but cutomised to my liking and I had a compact camera to take my pictures, so it was nothing fancy, but it still worked. If money isn't something you have work with what you've got ask your friends to help you and that's better than not trying. If you're adamant on having a nice blogger template Etsy has millions of different templates starting from around £5.
